Spring has arrived across Australia, and for gardeners that means one thing: it's time to get planting. Warmer soil and longer days make this the perfect season to start a vegie patch or refresh the one you have. At VarietyTradeSource.com, we stock a range of garden gear to help you get growing.
1. Why Raised Garden Beds Work So Well
Raised beds warm up faster than ground-level soil, drain better, and let you control exactly what goes into your growing mix. They also save your back, and they keep pets and lawn runners away from your plants. If your backyard soil is heavy clay or sandy, a raised bed is often the easiest fix.
2. Choose the Right Size and Material
Galvanised steel beds are strong, long-lasting and don't rot. Our 240x80x42cm Galvanised Raised Garden Bed suits most backyards, while the larger 320x80x42cm gives you room for a full season of tomatoes, zucchini and herbs. Short on space? A vertical option like the 4-Tier Raised Garden Bed works well on a patio or balcony.
3. Prepare Your Soil
Fill your bed with a quality mix of garden soil and compost. A 60L worm farm turns kitchen scraps into rich compost and liquid fertiliser, so you can keep feeding your soil all season.
4. Keep Weeds Under Control
Laying weed mat under and around your beds cuts down on weeding and keeps paths tidy, which means more time enjoying the garden.
5. What to Plant This Spring
Once the risk of frost has passed in your area, spring is a great time for tomatoes, capsicum, cucumbers, zucchini, beans, basil and other warm-season favourites. Check local planting guides, as timing varies between Brisbane, Melbourne, Perth and everywhere in between.
6. Water Smart
Water early in the morning, mulch the soil surface, and group thirsty plants together. Consistent watering is better than occasional heavy soaks.
