What is an egg candler?

Candling is a method of testing eggs while they incubate to determine whether they are viable, meaning fertilised and able to develop and hatch.

Basic steps

1. Test the incubator to see that it functions properly
2. Connect the plug of the egg turner to the control plug
3. Fill the water channels depending on local humidity
4. Place the egg with the tip side down
5. Close the lid and start the incubator
6. Press the reset button to start the day count from 0
7. Watch the humidity reading and fill the water channel when needed (usually every 4 days)
8. By day 18, remove the egg tray and place the eggs on the bottom grid
9. Fill both water channels at the same time to increase humidity (so the eggshells are soft enough for the chicks to break out)
10. Do not open the lid too often while chicks are hatching, as this dries out the shells of unbroken eggs. The water can be filled through the fill hole
