A Comfortable Campsite Without Overpacking

Plan a simple place to sit, eat and organise your gear before loading the car for your next camping trip.

Plan for your actual trip

Start with the number of people, the transport space and the facilities at the campsite. A short stay at a serviced site needs a different packing list from a remote trip. Check the operator’s rules and current conditions before leaving, and use that information to decide what earns a place in the car.

Make a place to sit and eat

Choose seating and a table around the group’s needs, then check both set-up and packed dimensions. A folding item can still be awkward to transport. Check the maker’s load limits and instructions as well. Try setting everything up at home so the first evening is not spent working out unfamiliar fittings.

Separate the useful from the just-in-case

Write down what you will use each day. Keep frequently used items together and avoid packing several pieces that do the same job. A simple layout makes it easier to find what you need and to notice what is missing before you leave.

Keep the camp easy to move around

Plan clear routes between sleeping areas, seating and the vehicle. Store loose gear so it is not scattered across those paths. Follow campsite rules and equipment instructions for cooking, lighting and shelter. Check local warnings rather than relying on conditions from a previous visit.

Pack for the trip home too

Bring suitable bags for rubbish and dirty gear, and follow the site’s waste arrangements. Dry and clean equipment according to its care instructions before storing it after the trip. Keep a short note of what you used and what stayed untouched: it is a useful starting point for a lighter packing list next time.
